Are you ready to turn your passion into a promising career? Look no further than the building & construction trades academy!


Our skill-based, hands-on, earn-and-learn program is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application. The camp guarantees an immersive and interactive environment, fostering active participation.


Tradespeople will engage in hands-on activities directly linked to authentic workplace scenarios, guided by professionals from our trade unions. Students will be evaluated on safety, performance, production, attendance/punctuality, and attitude--just like in a real apprenticeship.


Beyond mastering essential trade skills, participants will engage in:

  • Safety workshops with MIOSHA

  • Financial literacy seminars

  • Business immersion trips

  • Apprenticeship seminar

  • Employability skill development


This intensive 6 week program offers high school juniors and seniors, regardless of gender, a unique opportunity to dive headfirst into the world of skilled trades while earning a competitive wage.


HOW IT WORKS:

Step 1: To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • High school sophomore, junior or senior status in the Fall 2025

  • Be at least 15 years old

  • Residency within the COP District

  • Must have reliable transportation

  • Clothing requirements for safety:

    • Long sleeve cotton shirts

    • Jeans with no rips or frays

    • High cotton socks

    • Leather work boots required, steel-toed boots

Step 3: Attend Mandatory Interview & Informational Session

  • All participants must attend a mandatory interview and informational session on May 29th at 6:30pm at the Industrial Arts Institute in Onaway. Interview for the Position with the Northern MI Union Building Trades and meet with a Michigan Works! Talent Specialist.
