For COP ESD students entering 10th, 11th, or 12th Grade.
This program is designed for students entering grades 10, 11, and 12 who have previously attended a camp at IAI or possess foundational welding skills. Participants will have the opportunity to develop essential skills in welding safety, handheld and CNC plasma cutting, gas metal arc welding with solid and hard-facing wires, shielded metal arc welding, and metal fabrication.
Students can work towards earning a credential from the American Welding Society (AWS). Beyond mastering essential welding skills, participants will engage in a variety of exploring various career paths within the welding and metal fabrication industry, safety workshops with the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA).
Beyond mastering essential welding skills, participants will engage in a variety of enriching activities to enhance their overall readiness for the workforce. These include:
Safety workshops with MIOSHA
Apprenticeship seminar
Financial literacy seminars
Business immersion trips
Employability skill development
How It Works
Step 1: To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:
High school sophomore, junior or senior status in the Fall 2025
Be at least 15 years old
Residency within the COP District
Must have reliable transportation
Clothing requirements for safety: Long sleeve cotton shirt, jeans with no rips and frays, high cotton socks. Leather work boots required; steel-toed boots.

Step 3: Attend Mandatory Interview & Information Session
All participants must attend a mandatory interview and informational session on May 29th at 6:30pm at the Industrial Arts Institute in Onaway. This will involve an interview with the Industrial Arts Institute Director and a meeting with a Michigan Works! Talent Specialist.
